Stocks shot up today and recovered some losses after sharp declines in big tech stocks. After several red days, shares of Amazon (AAPL), Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) and other big companies rallied. On a sour note, reopening stocks (travel, cruise lines, airlines, hotels, etc) were down after AstraZeneca (AZN) announced it had its COVID-19 vaccine trial paused.
The S&P finished 2.08% up, the Nasdaq was 2.92%, leading the day, and the Dow finished 1.68% up. The volatility index (VIX) was down 4.8%, indicating increased risk appetite in traders.
Today, it was announced that AstraZeneca, a forerunner in the development of the COVID vaccine announced a pause of their experimental trial after one patient became more ill, pledging to make safety a priority and take the time necessary to let science prevail. This setback comes in stark contrast to politicians and governments who seem to imply a cure is just around the corner. Shares of AstraZeneca sank 2%, while those of companies competing to develop a Covid-19 vaccine including Moderna (MRNA) and Novavax (NVAX) rose.
US oil prices plunged nearly 7% today, after Saudi Aramco, the largest oil producer in the world, announced it would be slashing its selling price to Asia and the United States, per Bloomberg. "Oil demand globally is really sluggish. All of the low hanging fruit from the global oil recovery has already happened," said Michael Tran, managing director of global energy strategy at RBC Capital Markets.
Asia-Us cargo rates are at the highest since March lows. For bulls evidence of a rebounding economy, for bears activity is fueled by liquidity and the shoe has yet to drop.

Double Illusory Rings -- Post-Mortem and Guide

General Strategy:

After reading a few guides and watching Ymfah's tutorial on the subject, I decided to eschew the commonly given advice to disregard weapon upgrades. I felt the advice, as good as it was, wasn't working for me, and I found that the low damage output was causing more durability cost in the long run. Buying 2-3 clubs every section was more expensive than just upgrading it and paying the repair costs.
I would normally end a section with a sliver of durability remaining. Breaking the weapon intentionally then paying to repair it felt more cost effective for me. Not only that, but boss fights felt much faster taking advantage of that sweet, sweet S scaling in STR for the Club (at +10).
As far as my target gear was concerned, I was able to hit the mark fairly accurately, with all upgrades completed except for the Royal Kite Shield and Elite Knight Gloves.

I'm posting this today for a few reasons: Mostly to share my achievement with this community. Completely selfish boasting, yes. But I'm proud of myself, so, here it is. With that being said though, I also want to share this in case there are any of you out there are struggling with your own ND/NB runs looking for insight or guidance.

Stat priority:

Generally speaking, I only performed level-ups with the Herald between run sections (more below) when nothing else was needed (arrows, lifegems, etc.), and no further upgrades were available. Early on, I rushed strength to 30 to get some good damage output from the club with a single point in dexterity so I could pull/separate mobs with the Shortbow. After strength, I focused on Vigour, to add some measure of "error tolerance". By the time I was getting the Elite Knight set I dump few points into vitality for the extra load. Then dexterity gets pumped to 18 to carry the Dragonrider Bow, and the build is rounded out by getting Agility to the softcap at 110, and enough stamina to survive an extended trade of blows.
Late game stats focused on adding more damage and survivability by pumping strength to 50 and vigour to 45. I never got far enough to add more stamina, but that was the plan.

Run Sections and Boss Weakness, Summons, & Consumables Info

I kept a copy of the following, updating as I went, making note of key locations, upgrades, bosses and their weaknesses, as well as any summons or weapon buffs I might use. The intent of this route is to pursue the path of least resistance through the game, based on my preferred playstyle. Although it may seem to veer off in some weird directions, each part of the path was taken for a specific reason. I've tried to annotate each section below.
In each section, I used some discretion in terms of "gut feeling" about where to go off the beaten path in the pursuit of loot or souls. For the most part though, I stayed on script.
Points of interest marked with '==' are intended to be full-stop "must farm" points. For example, if the 3rd mummy in Lost Bastille after the Tower Apart bonfire kicks or ruins the bomb shortcut to McDuff, I would bone back to Majula and run up to the eagle nest again, as gaining access to him and the +6 club is critical to success at the Ruin Sentinels.
Points marked with '--' are important "to do" notes while running that particular section, with the intent of completing the build, or picking up a necessary consumable.
I've marked bosses in bold, along with their known weaknesses, and any summons and/or consumables I used to complete the fight as quickly and with as little complexity as possible.
Feel free to use this route as a guide for your own run, but please be aware that YMMV. Your own run may take you into areas too dangerous or risky for your playstyle, or you may have different requirements in terms of loadout or buffs. I would be open to suggestions regarding improvements to the path or it's efficacy, but I'll be honest: I will never run this again.

Flexiple: $80K/month connecting startups with developers

Hey everyone! This is Rich, from Failory, a site where we weekly interview startup founders. Today, I had the chance to interview the founders of a Bengaluru-based startup called Flexiple.
After working on a tech-related internship, Suvansh and his two friends decided to start testing different business ideas. The first ones failed, but then they launched Flexiple, a freelancing platform that connects startups with developers. This has been grown through cold outreach and side-project marketing up to $80,000/month.
Below, you'll find all his strategies and hits, as well as the mistakes and obstacles he had to confront.
 
Hi Suvansh! What's your background, and what are you currently working on?
I am a third-generation entrepreneur. I was born at a time when my grandfather and father had just closed down their clothes manufacturing business and had plans to start a hardware trading business. For the first 22 years of my life, I saw my father and grandfather build a sustainable business in a crowded market by vertically expanding and becoming a hardware manufacturing and trading business. During this time, I was rather unwittingly exposed to life as an entrepreneur as my father never wanted me to follow his path. Yet I learned a lot about negotiations with clients, resolution of co-founder conflicts, and the importance of having an open mind while overhearing his conversations and to a lesser extent having discussions with him.
Seven years later, I am now a tech entrepreneur and am building a tech talent network called Flexiple to enable scaling startups to hire & work with the top-1% remote freelance developers and designers. We make it easy for tech startups to hire & work with quality tech talent who are on-boarded over the course of a multi-stage screening process. Over the past couple of years, Flexiple has evolved and we now have 75+ clients and 200+ independent professionals onboard.
As the only non-tech co-founder (I have a strong inclination towards user experience design), I own sales and customer relations at Flexiple.

What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?
Prior to joining India’s top-ranked B-school - IIM Ahmedabad where I met my partners and Flexiple’s co-founders - Karthik and Hrishikesh, I had been working for 3 years at HUGE corporations which had thousands of employees across the globe, leading me to have a clearly defined role. However, I was never satisfied with my pace of learning during these three years. While at my first job, I found that the focus was more on just sticking to what has been done since the birth of the company, which led me to look for a switch. At my second job, I figured that learning only hard skills such as data analytics is not as fulfilling as I thought it would be.
In this search of learning opportunities, I explored the option of working with Karthik and Hrishikesh for a period of three months. The intention was to learn more about technology and entrepreneurship than what textbooks could teach me. Now, we have been working together on Flexiple for three and a half years now.

During this period, Flexiple has undergone multiple iterations. We started out as an automated platform built for scale which was ultimately not used by anyone. We tried out a pure-play service model and within a couple of weeks landed our first client, which ultimately resulted in us scrapping the platform completely. During this time, we decided to double down our focus on startups who were looking to hire remote full-time freelance talent. Having learned the importance of creating value before looking for a sale, we launched remote.tools which aims to be the platform where remote workers interact with each other.
 
How did you build Flexiple?
We started working on Flexiple on a part-time basis during our second year of MBA. Given we already had a flavor of the type of freelancers startups are on the lookout for, we decided to keep our focus during this 9 month period onboarding ~50 freelancers while using our automated testing and screening platform. We ran multiple tests on what kind of platform we should build and came to the conclusion that an asynchronous platform giving freelancers the freedom to complete the onboarding at their own pace was the best way to proceed. The product development and design were helmed by the three of us with 2 freelance developers and a designer completing the team.
However, our lack of prior product development left us spending 2x the amount we had budgeted for and with a platform which the freelancers were unwilling to use due to the sheer time investment required. This derailed our plans to hit the market hard when we started working full-time from April’17.
Flexiple’s first version
Learning quickly from our mistakes, we focused our efforts on having active client requirements so that we could incentivize the freelancers to take the screening process designed by us. Within a couple of weeks, we identified a couple of prospects and began engagements with them. However, due to a paucity of time, we had to give up the asynchronous testing methodology and conducted freelancer screening manually.
This model has been working well for us ever since and in the past 2 years, we have identified that the problem we are solving cannot be solved using completely automated customer-facing processes. We identified that we need to build robust internal processes that will enable us to grow Flexiple in a reliable and sustainable manner. Only then can we ensure that our clients and freelancers do not face the usual challenges associated with freelancer hiring.
To streamline our internal processes, we are using a host of third-party automation tools and have built a couple of tools of our own as well. One such tool is the Resume App with which we showcase our network to prospective buyers in a concise yet exhaustive manner. All our internal applications have been built while leveraging our freelancer network which is managed fully remotely.

With a robust business model with positive unit economics since day one, we have remained self-funded and have grown to make $80k per month in revenues all done at a shoestring monthly budget of $4,500.
 
Which were your marketing strategies to grow your business?
To start with, we focused almost exhaustively on cold outreach to both our freelancers and clients. A couple of channels such as LinkedIn, AngelList, worked well for us. However, due to the inherent limit attached to cold outreach, we started focusing on inbounds too while continually optimizing our cold outreach processes.
For inbounds, generating content related to freelancing, remote working worked well for us. During this 6 month process, we identified that the one common characteristic between most of our clients and freelancers was their inclination towards working remotely. Also, 80% of the 150+ conversations we had with this target audience suggested that choosing which tool to use for a particular use-case was their biggest challenge.
Managing a remote team ourselves, held us in good stead here as we built a curated repository of 100+ remote tools across 24 categories so as to make this discovery process easier. We decided to launch on Product Hunt and were pleasantly surprised to be voted as the #2 Product of the Day.
The best stat was that we landed 4 new clients via remote.tools and made 10 times the money we had invested in the product! Also, on a side note, we were able to launch the product on time and within budget :) The success of this experience showed how marketing should be more about creating value for your users rather than about your own product.
Apart from such out of the box marketing initiatives, cold outreach has been reaping rich dividends for us. For the past 6 months, the split of leads from our sales and marketing efforts has been 50:50.

What are your goals for the future?
In the month of July, we launched Remote Tools V2.0 which gave remote-first product makers the freedom to share their products with the remote working community. Within a month of the launch, 100+ remote-first products (we still curate each and every product) have been made live on the platform leading to a total of 250 products for remote workers to choose from for different use-cases.
In the next 6 months, we aim to make remote tools a hub for all conversations related to remote working and have taken the first step by launching The Remote Working Show. Where top leaders of remote working startups share their experience of building teams successfully, along with more useful content that would provide value to the remote working audience and encourage discussions.
With Remote Tools taking a life of its own, we also intend to publish content on Flexiple’s blogging platform to improve upon our search engine rankings for keywords related to our space.

We predict that this focus on creating value for all buyer personas should help us double our revenues by March 2020. However, we also intend to start paying the co-founders market-parity salaries valuing the impact they have had on the business and to future-secure Flexiple and Remote Tools.

What were the biggest challenges you faced and the obstacles you overcame?
The biggest challenge we faced was to build trust in an unorganized market. The efforts to organize have been haphazard, where complex skills are treated as a commodity that can be measured by usual marketplace dynamics such as ratings and reviews. The result is the core interests of all parties involved are compromised.
When a company wants to hire a freelance developer or a designer for a particular job, they have to deal with a lot of noise, leading them to engage with sub-pa not the best talent without having proper structures in place - thereby leading to a not-so-good experience. Increased competition and transparent pricing have not been able to solve this problem for these companies.
Our consistent and unwavering focus on quality has helped us differentiate ourselves and build a reputation as a preferred talent partner in the market.
We realized very early on that our community members are our core product, who have helped us garner a positive response. We continue to recognize this and have been working diligently to refine our screening process on a continuous basis.
Today we are a community of 200+ such members with freelancers from 5 countries with diverse backgrounds and skill sets. They range from hardcore backend developers and the most complete full-stack ninjas to expert UX’ers andamazing illustrators who have worked at top tech-centric companies such as Ola, Amazon, Microsoft, Adobe and Goldman Sachs.
Through such a high bar of quality, we are able to work with the best companies in the tech space and help solve their varied talent challenges through our community.
On a personal front, wearing different hats and juggling multiple responsibilities has been a challenge I have been able to live up to. Over the past 6 months, apart from managing and delivering on my personal targets of meeting our revenue targets, I have been managing Flexiple’s finances, handling the hiring and onboarding process which saw us grow from a 4-member to a 9-member team within 6 months, and giving inputs whenever necessary on UX design.
 
Which are your greatest disadvantages? What were your worst mistakes?
The biggest disadvantage in the first year was that none of the three of us were especially good at tangible skills needed to grow and build Flexiple. While Hrishikesh is a core techie and had worked at Adobe and Amazon as a Software Engineer, it had been 2 years since he had last coded.
Though, with our motivations aligning and immense efforts, all three of us are hands-on and to certain extent experts in a field, much-needed to grow Flexiple.
I have spent the last year or so, learning the nuances of sales and implementing them across both freelancer and client onboarding. At the same time, Hrishikesh has honed his product management capabilities while also getting back to being hands on with coding. And Karthik has taken to content marketing seamlessly and is our go-to-guy for everything relating to marketing.
We still have a lot to learn as we need to improve upon our client conversion rates, our ability to meet product deadlines, and content distribution.
However, the learnings we derived from the mistakes we made in the first year have us in good stead to ensure we do not repeat such costly mistakes and don’t let our goals blind us from understanding those of our customers.
 
If you had the chance to do things differently, what would you do?
The biggest mistake we made when we started out was to cloud our path forward with our own vision of the future rather than the needs of our customers. This mistake led us to build a platform no one wanted and set us back by 6 months and $8,000, which came directly from our savings.
Also, I tend to internalise mistakes and don’t let them go. This is a practice I have found to be immensely detrimental in both my personal and professional lives.
Thus, I would suggest my former self in 2016 to enjoy the ride while worrying less about the mistakes and their repercussions and to trust my gut.

What are some sources for learning you would recommend for entrepreneurs who are just starting?
I am an avid reader and intend to draw learnings from everything I read. Though, for all things related to entrepreneurship, I read threads on Indiehackers and have recently started engaging with them. For my core competency i.e. sales, my go to places have been the SalesHacker blogs and podcasts with Outreach’s blogs also featuring high up on the list.
Apart from that, I surround myself with a group of friends who are honest and forthright with me as entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey even though you have co-founders to accompany you on the ride.

[Meet Report] USS Nationals HWW (long!)

Background: This is my 4th USS Nationals. I was a MWW for the first 2 years of competing and moved up to HWW just before 2016 Nats.
2015: 2nd in 165
2016: 3rd in 181
2017: 2nd in 181
2018: 4th in 181 (Was really hoping for 2nd or 3rd because Kim Derks is on a whole other level haha)
TL;DR because I am very long winded: Felt like my training prepared me pretty well for this event. Need to get more consistent with dumbbell and stronger on deadlift and stones. I’ll summarize how I trained at the end—I definitely feel like I came in at my strongest ever but the competition at the top was pretty fierce this year and “it’s a game of inches”.
I was the most nervous about giant dumbbell. Many of the ladies were unprepared for the girth of the handle because it was advertised as 2” and it definitely isn’t. I’m strong enough to get 100 pounds, on this dumbbell, but I get in my head. While we were standing around waiting for the comp to start I think my nerves got the best of me. I had two that were close to locking out, then 3 cleans that were not positioned well on my shoulder. See second video in this post In retrospect I should have re-cleaned the DB to get a clean shot at it but I got flustered. One rep on this would have earned me a podium finish and still stings to think about. 7/10 zeroed in my class but I trained hard for this event and really wanted that one rep. CDB Is still the only event I’ve zeroed in a comp (twice now) so it’s a bit of a nemesis at this point.
Car deadlift was heavy. We had tested the Apollo frame a couple weeks ago with a Ford Focus and this felt almost exactly the same. For those who don’t know, the frame is in two pieces so the handle portion can be moved forward to make the lift easier; this was done for the LWW and MWW but not for the HWW. It changes the angle of the lever arm significantly. I figured I would get 1 or 2 reps here. I did the hitchiest deadlift I’ve ever done and then picked the car up about 1.5” three more times. 7/10 zeroed in my class and my 1 rep was good for 3rd.
We were finished with the first 2 events by noon and all signs pointed to us getting out by about 6. However, there seemed to be a lot of confusion when setting up the flip and drag event and it ended up being changed to a flip for distance, run back to the sled and drag (shorter distance). Video is combined with the DB. I should have done better in this event. Tire flip is my thing but I couldn’t get the tire to land flat so I could get right back to the next flip. I trained for sled drag with the Apollo sled on concrete + ~300#; this was maybe 450# but a completely different surface and I was a little slower paced at the event than in training. 3rd again.
I’ll spare you the details, but 4 hours later I was setting up for my truck pull. Only one woman out of 55 competitors finished the course. I could tell from watching that there was a certain point where there must have been a low spot in the floor and everyone struggled (maybe around the halfway/40’ mark). So my strategy was to try to build speed through that point so I could keep it moving. I felt good about the event after I finished and watched my video, but it turned out that I would have needed to pull it another 14 inches or so to continue my 3rd place streak and instead I got 5th. My short reach hurt me (I’ve been cued to reach further forward on the recovery) but I think I did about as well as I could have. Maybe if my foot hadn’t slipped off the platform I would have had time for one more pull at the end.
Then it was time to get ready for stones. Strategy for this event all along was to get the first 3 stones fast and then take a shot at the last 265 stone (195/215/240/265 was the series). My stones ended up going pretty smoothly, though not particularly fast; I got 3 in just over 30s. It’s hard to tell from the angle but for some reason I took a couple seconds to find my hand position under the stone each time. I made the rookie mistake of not setting my stones before I went—the 2nd stone was slightly too close to the truck and the last stone wasn’t even aligned with the platform. I also didn’t have enough tacky on the back of my hand for the last two stones; I used it on the 240 and then I really needed more to have a shot at picking 265. Despite all the complaints I saw about too much tacky on the stones that was only true of our first two stones (that had the most competitors touching them); the last two stones were fairly clean. 4th in this event.
Training/Lessons
I switched coaches in mid-April from my Oly-focused coach to a PL-focused local coach who trains quite a few of the strongwomen at our gym too. I’m happy with my decision. I felt a little rushed with ~9-10 weeks to get ready since I haven’t really trained events much at all since Nationals last year. My training centered around squat, deadlift, and some benching with a TON of back work. More than anything I think that helped the most. I had done a qualifying contest in March and was able to get a 90# CDB for 3 reps so I felt confident that I would get the 100# dumbbell in time. Unfortunately the Bigg Dogg was pretty inconsistent for me due to the handle size. Because I only expected to get 1 or 2 reps, I always trained between 1-3 reps and I should have practiced a couple times going for the whole minute. As I got tired my cleans got sloppy; I’m not sure if I would have been able to lock it out but I would have had a better chance had I known how to deal with fatigue better.
The tire at the event felt lighter than the one I trained on, but I could not get the rhythm of getting it to land flat. I basically did this event for 3 rounds once a week in training and felt like that prepared me well but I was already pretty good at tire flip (my coach told me to win this event!. My No Bulls provided sufficient traction on the floor (some people were bemoaning their footwear choices).
Truck pull I practiced by pulling a 400-500# prowler. Then I trained with friends twice using a pickup with a tire hitched off the back to add friction, as well as an actual Budget truck with ~500# in the back. The actual event felt pretty similar to my practice with the Budget truck because the parking lot had a bit of a hill towards the end. I honestly expected the floor to be more level than it was. I’m not really sure what I could have done different in training other than practice with a truck a few more times. I really should have eaten some real food before this event; I ate as much as I usually do for a 6-7 hour contest without really realizing that we were there for 13 hours!
For stones, some people were saying that the platforms were higher than they were supposed to be because of the lip on the edge; I found the lip actually helped me because I tend to get larger diameter stones stuck right on the edge of a 48” platform. My coach made me train to 48” and I missed 246 to that height more often than I made it. But I had no problem at all getting 240 up on the truck so that felt good!
All the staff and volunteers were amazing, even as the day grew long everyone I dealt with was still supportive and trying to help make it a good day for all the athletes. That being said, any competition with close to 400 athletes is bound to have some snafus. I personally would prefer a more selective qualification process that might cut down the number of competing athletes slightly OR move to a 2-day format. It doesn’t seem that the heavy weights result in people self-selecting not to sign up. I can’t fault people since I attended my first Nationals being very new to the sport, but I cringed a bit when I saw someone trying to pantomime how to lap and load a stone in the back for someone who had never done stones before.
